The Modern Honolulu is one of my favorite properties in Waikiki. I have stayed there a few times and have been impressed each and every visit with the accommodations and the high level of service. A couple of weekends ago, I was able to get a fantastic Kamaaiana (local) rate booking through The Modern’s site for a one night stay to celebrate my friend’s upcoming wedding. She had never been to The Modern so I was super excited for her to experience the property.
Arrival
We arrived about an hour before check-in, but were accommodated with ease by the front desk. As we waited, we were provided with cold hand towels and shots of refreshing cilantro lemonade, a lovely personal touch. The lobby area is posh but simple with some beautiful surf board art adorning the front desk area.
The Room
Our room was located on the 7th floor with a city and partial ocean-view. The all-white room decor was exactly how I remembered it. Simple, fresh and chic. The room was spacious and housed two double beds. I loved the crisp and open feel.
Special Welcome
There was a special treat left as a celebratory gift for my friend that actually ended up being one of her favorite Proseccos. The glasses each contained a berry puree and a chocolate swirl. A very sweet gesture from the hotel.
The Property
The Modern Honolulu oozes a cool vibe. From the rooms, to the lobby, to the pool and restaurant, there is a chill and polished feel that sets it apart from other Waikiki hotels. There is smooth, lounge type music playing throughout the property that just puts you in a relaxed sort of state.
The Pool
The pool deck, which is probably my favorite part of the hotel, features large lounge chairs that get covered upon request with comfy white towels. There is an upper pool that is adults-only and a lower pool where kiddos can play, although pool space is a bit limited. I have stayed here both with kids and without and found that the area never felt overwhelmed with kids.
There are umbrella’s for shade as well as complimentary sunscreen and water. On past stays here the service by the pool was outstanding. I loved the complimentary treats they bring around throughout the day; li hing pineapple, frozen mocha and cups of sorbet. I’m sure they still offer these little perks, I just wasn’t able to stay long enough to indulge before our check-out on Sunday afternoon.
They also have day beds you can reserve while at the pool. The cost you pay for the day bed, can be applied towards food and drink so if you are planning on spending the whole day, the price isn’t so bad. And they look incredibly comfy!
The Food
I had made dinner reservations at the on-property restaurant called Ravish when I booked the room. Unfortunately I received an email on the day of check-in letting me know that the restaurant would be closing that day due to it being under new ownership. I decided to look into making a reservation at the other on-property restaurant called The Grove. I was able to do so through the hotel concierge and it ended up being a great choice for a low-key dinner for two.
For dinner, I ordered the Burrata and Beet Salad which was fantastic! It was comprised of roasted beets, arugula, feta cheese, candied pistachio, seasonal fruit, grilled baguettes and macadamia nut vinaigrette.
In the morning we enjoyed breakfast at The Grove and had an equally tasty experience. I order the Honey Mac Nut Latte (so delicious!) and the Egg White Frittata which was made with egg whites, kale, mushrooms, onions, asparagus and parmesan cheese. The Grove is a fantastic dining option, even if you’re not staying at The Modern.
All-in-all another great staycation at The Modern Honolulu. This was a quick visit and I look forward to staying a bit longer next time. If you are looking for a Waikiki boutique hotel that offers cool vibes and great service be sure to check them out. Aloha!
