Oh my goodness, there are so many amazing DIY ideas out there for Easter Eggs! Just do a quick search on Pinterest and you’ll find a vast variety of inspiration. From typography to tie dye to unicorns, the possibilities are endless. I decided to keep with a tropical theme for this year’s Easter egg decorating. Like last years Hula Girl Eggs, this years theme showcases one of our favorite tropical icons. Behold, Hala Kahiki, aka Pineapple (in Hawaiian). This one sure was fun to create!
You’ll find our Pineapple Easter Egg featured in Food Network Magazine’s April issue, which showcases eggs decorated from the 50 States. Aloha Lovely was so honored with the opportunity to represent Hawaii! (gallery here)
I’m gonna show you exactly how I did it and will include some tips on what did and didn’t work for me. This jeweled “princess of fruit” is sure to bring out some sweet smiles this Easter. Here we go, DIY Pineapple Easter Eggs.
Pineapple Easter Egg DIY Supplies
Here is the basics of what you’ll need.
- Craft Egg
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Self-Adhesive Gems
- Green Card Stock
- Scissors
Step 1 – Paint the Egg
Start painting the egg in your choice of pineapple yellow. I found it was easiest to paint one half of the egg, set to dry and then paint the other half. The paint does not have to be perfect because it really only serves as a background color. The egg will ultimately be covered with gems.
Step 2 – Cut the Pineapple Crown Leaves
While you’re waiting for your egg to dry, start cutting out your pineapple crown. Cut out a few different sizes and set aside. You probably won’t need more than 12-15 pieces total.
Step 3 – Start Assembling the Pineapple Crown
This is where things got a little tricky for me. I started with taking a one of the larger cut out leaves and bending the flat part to create a tab. Then placed a dot of hot glue on the tab to secure the leaf to the top of the egg.
I then took the next leaf and did the same thing, placing the glued tabs on top of one another.
This started to get a little cumbersome, placing each individual leaf on the egg one at a time, so I decided to take the crown off the pineapple and assemble it separately. It was a lot easier to hold on to the pieces so that the glue could set properly. I just worked my way around using smaller pieces on the outside.
I then glued the crown to the top of the egg and added a few straight leaves (meaning no bent tabs) to the outside to cover up the gap between the curve of the egg and the flat bottom of the crown.
Step 4 – Start Applying Gems to Egg
Start at the center of the egg and use the largest gems. Begin to apply them one right next to the other. Continue around the egg, eventually decreasing the side of the gem. This will mimic the natural look of the outside of the pineapple. Cover the egg completely with gems.
Voila! Pineapple Easter Egg!
