Empowering Female Shows to Binge: Strong Women to Watch

empowering female shows

There are so many options when it comes to what kind of shows you can stream nowadays. Regardless of what platform you use, the possibilities are endless. Recently, I’ve found myself binging on more female-focused, girl power vibing shows. Call it part of my most recent self-care routine, but I just can’t get enough of these inspiring (and sometimes conspiring) women. Read on to see my favorite empowering female shows to binge.

Good Girls

Good Girls is a fun comedy-drama about three women, Beth and Annie, who are sisters, and Ruby, who is Beth’s best friend. Each woman is going through their own struggle to make ends meet, when they get the bright idea to try and pull off robbing a supermarket. That’s when things start to get interesting. I especially like the transformation you start to see in the main character of Beth, she no longer only has the identity of housewife and mother, she becomes so much more!

Where to watch: NBC and Netflix

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Oh, how I binged this show! The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Madge Maisel through her transformation from a 1950s New York City housewife to an edgy and talented comedian. Not only are the characters beautifully developed and the story engaging, but the styling of the set and wardrobe are impeccable.

Where to watch: Amazon Prime

Orange is the New Black

I definitely got a late start with this one. Orange is the New Black starts out with a focus on the character of Piper, who is a 30-something “regular” woman who gets sentenced to 15 months in federal women’s prison for transporting drug money for her then-girlfriend (based on a true story). The series soon evolves to tell the stories of the other inmates, which is what I found most interesting. Overall, a good mix of drama and comedy

Where to watch: Netflix

Killing Eve

I am brand new to watching Killing Eve and I am loving it! It’s a cat and mouse game between two female characters, Eve, a British intelligence agent, and Villanelle, a psychopathic female assassin. Each character becomes increasingly obsessed with the other as they hunt each other down. I love the character development of each of these female leads and can’t wait to how their relationship evolves.

Where to watch: Hulu

Jessica Jones

Finally! A female superhero that I can get behind! Jessica Jones is a foul-mouth, private detective who also happens to have superhuman strength. She’s very rough around the edges and super sarcastic. Did I mention how much I love her character? Follow her as she drinks her way through the day and investigates her past.

Where to watch: Netflix

Dead to Me

Dead to Me is a dark comedy that starts out with two grieving women bonding over therapy. Things quickly evolve as these two women become closer and the stories of each of their losses become more complicated. I love the dynamic between the two female leads played by Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.

Where to watch: Netflix

Anne with an E

I was so excited to stumble upon Anne with an E as I was a big fan of the 1980’s series, Anne of Green Gables. What a delightful return to the characters of Avonlea. The series revolves around the main character of Anne Shirley, an orphan who is adopted by two elderly siblings. She is a wild spirit of a girl, with an amazing imagination and sometimes hot temper.

Where to watch: Netflix

Shrill

So I was literally close to hitting publish on this post when I discovered yet another show that encompasses female empowerment. Shrill stars a character named Annie who is trying to make it as a journalist. She deals with typical life things all while trying to reconcile her own self-confidence regarding her weight. Annie is sweet, creative, intelligent and hilarious and I am totally falling in love with her!

Where to watch: Hulu

Thank you! I actually don’t typically write about entertainment, it just happened to be a timely piece considering we are all still very much homebound during Covid. I also picked up on the fact that I was trending towards shows that focused on female leads, and that was of interest. 🙂

I’m actually currently watching Handmaid’s Tale and it makes me soooo uneasy! I’m liking it but I also want it to speed up and get to the point where society starts to flip in Gilead. Ahhh!!!
