Oahu’s North Shore is famous for its laidback vibe and monster waves. The countless gorgeous beaches and delicious local grinds. The North Shore is one of our favorite parts of the island and I’m excited to share yet another cool feature about it. Hawaii Polo Club.
Located in Mokuleia, Hawaii Polo Club has been around since 1963. They host polo matches every Sunday starting in April and going through the beginning of September. The field is located oceanside so you are able to enjoy some polo as well as a beautiful beach! Although they do have some covered seating, the way to attend a polo match in Hawaii is to tailgate right on the field.
Arrive Early
I highly recommend you arrive when the gates open at 11 AM. There will be a line of cars waiting and you want to get a front row spot. When you drive through the gate you will pay your entry fee and then just follow the loop around the field. When we come with a group we are sure to leave enough room between two cars to set up our tent.
What to Pack
Here is a list of some of our favorite tailgating items, to include food and drinks. You’re going to be on the field for a few hours so be sure to be prepared. They do have some food and drinks for purchase there, but at a premium of course.
- tent
- camping/beach chairs
- towels
- swimsuits
- lawn games
- cards/dominos
- cooler with water/beer
- paper plates/plastic utensils/paper towels
- rotisserie chicken from a grocery store (throw in an insulated bag)
- potato or mac salad
- chips & salsa
- cut-up fruit & veggies
- cookies or brownies
If you arrive when the gates open you’ll have a few hours before the polo match begins. Luckily the field is located right next to the beach, so if you’re in the mood for a dip it’s only steps away. Just be aware that there are no lifeguards in this area and the water is typically a bit rougher.
Once the polo match starts its pretty fun to watch the athletes gallop up and down the field. Not that I really have any idea what’s going on, it’s fun! Another fun aspect is the occasional skydiver that will land on the field during the breaks. Skydive Hawaii is located across from the field so it’s normal for more advanced divers to make an appearance. It definitely catches you off guard if you’re not expecting it!
Hitting up the Hawaii Polo Club for a match is definitely a unique thing to do on Oahu. If you’re headed to the North Shore on a Sunday between April and September, I highly recommend you check it out. Aloha!
