A Visit to Dole Plantation: Pineapple Paradise

If you ask the average person what comes to mind when they think of Hawaii, more likely than not, pineapples are going to be in the mix of images that pop in their heads. And rightly so, as the state was once the largest producer of pineapple in the world. Pineapple is still associated strongly with Hawai and you’ll see pineapple themed everything across the islands. If you find yourself on the island of Oahu, there is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in all things pineapple, a visit to a little place called the Dole Plantation. A Little History Originally founded in 1901 by James Dole, the plantation at its peak, once produced 75% of the world’s pineapples. The plantation still grows and exports pineapples, although now on a much smaller scale. The Dole Plantation as a tourist attraction opened to the public in 1989 as Hawaii’s “Pineapple Experience”. The space which was originally operated as a fruit stand in the 1950s, was eventually expanded to include a train ride, garden tour and a large maze.
