If you ask the average person what comes to mind when they think of Hawaii, more likely than not, pineapples are going to be in the mix of images that pop in their heads. And rightly so, as the state was once the largest producer of pineapple in the world. Pineapple is still associated strongly with Hawai and you’ll see pineapple themed everything across the islands.
If you find yourself on the island of Oahu, there is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in all things pineapple, a visit to a little place called the Dole Plantation.
A Little History
Originally founded in 1901 by James Dole, the plantation at its
The Dole Plantation as a tourist attraction opened to the public in 1989 as Hawaii’s “Pineapple Experience”.
Visiting the Dole Plantation
A visit to the Dole Plantation is an easy stop on your way to the North Shore of Oahu and a great way to spend a couple of hours. As tourist attractions go, you’ll have your fair share of crowds and costs but overall it’s a reasonable ask for the quality of experience. Here are some musts when you stop at the Dole
Take a Train Ride
The Pineapple Express is an adorable little train that will take you on a 2-mile ride through the plantation’s property. The ride is narrated through an audio recording and gives a nice overview of the story of pineapple in Hawaii. Great for visitors of all ages,
Tip: Don’t be intimidated by the line for the train ride. I’ve found that it moves rather fast. I believe there are multiple trains running at once.
Get Lost in Paradise
Dole Plantation’s giant Pineapple Garden Maze stretches over three acres and includes nearly two and a half miles of paths. It was named the world’s largest maze in 2008 and is an impressive labyrinth of tropical flora. Wander around and join in on the fun of seeking out eight secret stations.
Enjoy a Sweet Treat
No trip to Dole Plantation is complete without getting a Dole Whip! This cool, sweet and refreshing treat can be enjoyed in a variety of ways and is always a must when we go. I usually get it in a sugar cone garnished with a lovely chunk of pineapple.
Tip: Although the Dole Whip is super tasty, a little sweetness goes a long way! Consider sharing one amongst two people. I always seem unable to finish one on my own!
There is also a garden tour you can purchase tickets for that we have done in the past. A great educational experience as far as pineapple goes. And don’t forget the huge country store, where you will find even more pineapple paraphernalia. However you customize your experience at Dole Plantation, you’re bound to have a great time! Aloha!
