Keālia Trail: A Northshore Hike with Beautiful Views

Keālia Trail

Looking for a shorter hike that still packs a workout punch? Head to the north shore of Oahu and spend the morning (or afternoon) on Keālia Trail. This switchback-heavy trail will get you both sweating and in awe of the beautiful ocean views.

I’ve hiked this trail a few times over the years and now most recently with my oldest daughter. I told myself that this time, I would hike beyond the picnic table. But, alas, just like every other time, that was the point where I turned back. I blame it on the aggressive-looking clouds I saw creeping in, as this is not a trail you want to slip and slide on. Next time, I swear I’ll hike beyond the picnic table and add a few more miles to the journey. 😉

To get to Keālia Trail head over to the Waialua side of the north shore after Dillingham Airfield. It’s the final left turn before you hit Kaena State Park. (click on map for directions)

After the left turn, follow the road a bit until you come to a parking lot on the left. Be sure to hit the restrooms before you hit the trail. It’s a huge bonus they’re here! You’ll find them in two separate buildings just adjacent to the parking lot.

Also, be sure to slather on that sunscreen and load up with water.

This hike always seems to sneak up on me regarding hydration and exposure (although there are shady spots here and there throughout the hike)

The trail starts out pretty chill, but you’ll soon see it intensify in the most pleasant of ways. You’ll meander up switchback after switchback as you make your way to the top. And you’ll be blessed with the most gorgeous coastal views. The terrain is rocky but not intimidating, just watch your step and keep an eye on the kiddos if they tag along.

I was comfortable with my girls doing this hike when they were in elementary school, just as an FYI.

There was some overgrowth in some areas, you could still clearly make out the trail, just seemed like it was maybe due for a trim? It’s a great workout, which I typically always choose to do in the AM to avoid the hottest part of the day. And the views? There is no shortage of them.

Took us a couple of hours round-trip with a short break at the picnic table. We were going at a pretty easy pace and didn’t stop too much along the way. Take your time, watch your step and soak in those views.

Aloha!
