Apparently I’ve been living under a rock because I just discovered a cool app that has been around since 2013. Hipcamp, can sort of be described as the Airbnb of camping. It allows users to search for and book outdoor stays and campgrounds on privately owned land based on location, natural features and amenities. And as it turns out, Hipcamp is a good option for affordable accommodations in Hawaii
A quick search of Hipcamp in Hawaii reveals a number of enticing options ranging from basic campsites, modified mini buses, cozy cabins and yurts. Depending on your budget and comfort-level, you’re bound to find some options that compete with the pricy accommodations of hotels and and the increasingly rare Airbnb availability on the islands.
I recently stumbled upon Hipcamp as I was searching for a quick one-night reservation for myself and my dog as we would need to be away from our home while it was getting tented for termites (a very common and regular maintenance occurrence in Hawaii).
I decided to look up camping options on Oahu, just to do something different as well as not break the bank for a quick one-night stay.
As I dug into the options available, I was excited at what I saw. It also made me wonder how many people planning a trip to Hawaii would think of checking Hipcamp when searching for accommodations? Hence the reason for this post.
The pup and I decided to stay at a site up on the North Shore of Oahu. I’m happy to have found Hipcamp and will definitely use it again in the future. And perhaps I will dedicate another blog post to the Rasta Bus that we stayed in 😉
Booking on Hipcamp was very easy and similar to booking on Airbnb or VRBO. Pick your dates, view the options and remember to check the details like cancellation policies. Then all you do is book! The host is then able to communicate with you before you arrive to set expectations and answer any questions. Easy peasy.
Hipcamp really is a great option to add into the mix when you’re searching for accommodations in Hawaii. Depending on the type of traveller you are, you could find the perfect place to stay and save yourself a few bucks for other expenses while traveling. Till next time, Aloha!
