From Army Barracks to Boutique Hotel: A Wonderful Stay at the Lodge at the Presidio

A media rate was provided by the Lodge at the Presidio in exchange for creating this content and sharing my unique experience.

Historic brick buildings sit in front of an expansive and lush parade lawn. The breeze is perfect on a late July day, where one only needs to turn their head to get seemingly never-ending views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Located in a truly pristine spot, untainted by the bustle and noise of the city, yet still only a few easy minutes away. What was once U.S. Army barracks is now an upscale boutique hotel. The Lodge at the Presidio.

When I was looking for accommodations for our upcoming trip, this property really stood out. It had charm and style. Felt tucked away and special. And had a historic story that made it so much more than just another hotel. Family friendly, yet sophisticated. A perfect place to lay your head after a long day of exploring San Francisco.

Historic Charm with Upscale Finishes

Built between 1895-1897, the Lodge at the Presidio is housed in what was once the Montgomery Street Barracks on the Presidio of San Francisco. The Presidio was once one of the largest Army posts in the country, supporting numerous military efforts. In 1994, the Presidio was officially transferred from the Army to the National Parks Service, where it is now a national park site and a National Historic Landmark District.

You can feel the past at the Lodge at the Presidio, whether rocking in a chair on the large wooden front porch or exploring the hotel interior. Adorned with photography and artifacts from its early days, paired with impeccable taste, this hotel has a unique vibe.

Check-in was a breeze and we were pleasantly surprised to discover that our room featured an excellent view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The number one thing that my youngest daughter wanted to do during our short stay in San Francisco was see the Golden Gate Bridge. Now, not only could we see it from our room, but from multiple vantage points just outside the hotel.

Our room was beyond spacious, with two queen beds and plenty of room to stretch out. I was equally impressed with the size of the bathroom, beautifully and thoughtfully designed as well. There is a polish to the interior design, with a healthy dose of nostalgia. It feels balanced, though, high-end and considered but also approachable.

Beyond the Expected, Hotel Extras

The Lodge at the Presidio checks all the boxes for beautiful spaces inside and out and great service from every employee we encountered. Everything you’d expect from a hotel of this caliber. Beyond that, there are also a few additional perks to staying at the Lodge at the Presidio, and both center around food and drink.

Every day, the Lodge at the Presidio hosts a nicely thought-out complimentary continental breakfast. Featuring oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, pastries, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, brewed coffee and juices, it is the perfect amount of food to start out your day.

And in the evenings, you’ll appreciate complimentary local wines and a selection of cheeses and charcuterie, which you can enjoy by the outdoor patio firepit, which also features stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Presidio Tunnel Tops and Beyond

Located mere steps from the hotel is the Presidio Tunnel Tops, a beautifully designed park with winding trails full of native plants and amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge and bay. I loved being able to explore the park and the beach beyond without having to drive anywhere. What an amazing perk!

My daughters and I took a decent walk through the gardens and over to Crissy Field, where we continued to walk down the beach, towards the bridge. We walked all the way down to the Warming Hut Park Store where we got some coffee and a few souvenirs. The perfect way to spend an afternoon.

The location of The Lodge at the Presidio is also ideal for exploring beyond the city limits. We found it to be a great jumping off point when we headed up to Muir Woods for the afternoon for example, as it was nice to be so close the bridge and not have to meander through the city to get everywhere.

We also took advantage of using the free Presidio Go Shuttle to get to downtown San Francisco.

It was easy to catch the shuttle at the Visitor Center, which is across the street from the hotel. It’s these small conveniences that add up to a great overall travel experience.

Dining Near the Lodge at the Presidio

There are some great options for dining within walking distance from the hotel. Two that we were able to try include Colibri Mexican Bistro and Il Parco. Colibri is a great option offering authentic and tasty Mexican cuisine with lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed lunch here when we first arrived.

Il Parco is a great option for some quick grab-and-go food. We enjoyed some pizza and pasta along with some more great views of the park and bridge.

If we had more time I would have made reservations at another restaurant onsite called Dalida, which has some amazing reviews and looks like a beautiful space to dine in. Next time, it will definitely be on my list!

Overall, we had an amazing stay at The Lodge at the Presidio. I will be back in a heartbeat and will be sure to stay for a much longer visit. If you are looking for a unique property that offers quiet luxury along with historical charm, this is it.

Traveling with family, especially kiddos? It’s got the space (and a huge front lawn to run around on) Enjoy unbelievable views of the Golden Gate Bridge, all from the backyard of this home away from home.
